வழி எங்கும் பச்சைப் பசேல் என்று மரகதக் கம்பளம் போர்த்தியது போலப் பச்சை பயிர்கள். அதன் நடுவே ஓடும் வயல் நீர்நிலைகளில் நண்டுகளைப் பிடிக்க வெள்ளை நிறக் கொக்குகள். மரங்கள், மலைகள், வண்ணக் கிளிகள், குயில்கள் எனக் காண்பதற்கு இனிய காட்சிகளை எல்லாம் கடந்து வந்தது அந்த உயரக கார்.
சன்ஷேடைத் திறந்து வைத்துக் கொண்டு, கார் சீட்டின் மீது கம்பீரமாக அமர்ந்து வந்த பத்ரியைப் பார்த்து வயலில் வேலை செய்தவர்கள் வாயைப் பிளந்தனர்.
“பாஸ்… அந்த பாட்டிங்க எல்லாம் உங்களைத் தான் சைட் அடிக்கிறாங்க,” என சரண் பெருமையாக நினைத்துச் சொல்ல…
“டேய்ய்…!”
“ஓ… சாரி பாஸ். உங்களுக்கு பல்லு போன பாட்டிய விட, பப்புக்கு போற பொண்ணுங்க தான் பிடிக்கும்னு மறந்துட்டேன் பாஸ். ஆனா இந்த ஊர்ல அந்த மாதிரி பொண்ணுங்க கிடைப்பாங்களா தெரியலயே…” என சரண் வயல் வெளியில் வைத்தே விண்வெளிக்குப் போகும் பெண்ணைத் தேட…
கையில் இருந்த மேகசினால் சரணின் பின்மண்டையில் ஒன்றை வைத்தான் பத்ரி.
“வாயை மூடிட்டு ஒழுங்கா ஓட்டறியா… இல்ல உன்னை இங்கயே இறக்கி விட்டுப் போகவா?” என்றான்.
“கப்… சுப்…” என அடங்கி போனவனுக்கு தெரியும் — பத்ரி சொன்னதையும் செய்வான்; அதற்கு மேலையும் செய்வான் என்று.
வாலாக நீண்ட தார் சாலையில் வண்டி வழுக்கிக் கொண்டு சென்றது. கண்ணிறைந்த இயற்கையோடு பயணித்துக் கொண்டிருந்த போதும், அந்தப் பயணத்தில் ஒருவனுக்கு மட்டும் சலிப்பும் அலுப்பும் தட்டியது.
“இன்னும் எவ்வளவு தூரம்டா, சரண்?” என வாய் விட்டே கேட்டான் பத்ரி.
“பாஸ்… இன்னும் பத்து கிலோ மீட்டர் தான். அப்புறம் ஊர் வந்துடும்,” என்றான் சரண்.
“டேய்… இதையே தான்டா முன்னாடியே இருந்து சொல்லிட்டு வர்ற. இன்னும் எத்தனை ‘பத்து கிலோ மீட்டர்’ இருக்கு?” என்றவனோ கடுப்பின் உச்சிக்கே போய் விட்டான்.
“பாஸ், என்னைச் சொல்லிக் குற்றமில்ல. இந்த ஜி-மேப் தான் காரணம். ரொம்ப நேரமா ஊரைச் சுற்றி சுற்றி காட்டுதே தவிர, ஊருக்குப் போய் சேர வழியைக் காட்ட மாட்டேங்குதே. நான் என்ன செய்ய?” என்றான் சரண்.
“ச்சை… போய் தொலை,” என்றவன் கையில் வைத்திருந்த பத்திரிகையை முகத்தில் மூடியபடியே அமர்ந்து, நிலையிலேயே உறங்கச் சென்று விட்டான்.
கார் மெயின் ரோட்டிலிருந்து பிரியும் கிளைச் சாலைக்குள் சென்று செம்மண் சாலையை அடைந்தது.
‘சிங்கம்பட்டி தங்களை அன்புடன் வரவேற்கிறது’ என்னும் பெயர் பலகையைப் பார்த்தவுடன்,
“பாஸ்… ஒருவழியா ஊருக்கு வந்துட்டோம்!” என ஆர்ப்பாட்டமாய் அறிவித்தான் சரண். என்ன ஆனந்தம் அந்த கரடி மூஞ்சிக்கு!
“ம்ம்ம்…” என்பது மட்டுமே பதிலாகக் கிடைக்க, அதையே வெகுமதியாக எடுத்துக் கொண்டு வண்டியை வேகமாக செலுத்தினான் சாரதி.
குண்டும் குழியுமாய் இருக்கும் சாலைக்குள் ரோல்ஸ் ராய்ஸ் காரை கொண்டு வந்தால் என்ன கதியாகும்? — எல்லாம் கட்டவண்டியின் நிலைதான்.
வண்டி குலுங்கிக் குலுங்கி, கவிழ்ந்து விழும் அளவுக்கு சென்றது.
“டேய், சரண்!” என பத்ரி அதட்ட…
“பாஸ்… நான் ஒன்னும் பண்ணல. ரோடு அப்படியே இருக்கு. நான் என்ன செய்ய?” என அப்பாவியாகக் கேட்டான்.
“அதான் ரோடு சரியில்லன்னு தெரியுதுல! வண்டிய மெதுவா ஓட்டாம அங்க என்ன புடுங்குற?” என வெடுக்கென்று கேட்டான் பத்ரி.
கார் செல்லும் வழியில் சில பாதசாரிகளும் பள்ளிச் சிறார்களும் கடந்து சென்றனர்.
அவர்களில் சிலர் பத்ரியின் காரைக் கண்டு வியந்து, அவர்களையும் ஏற்றிச் செல்லுமாறு கேட்டனர். கார் நிற்காமல் சென்றதும், அவர்கள் முகத்தில் படிந்த ஏமாற்றம் அப்பட்டமாகத் தெரிந்தது.
“டேய்… உன் இஷ்ட **** வண்டிய ஓட்டுற. என்னடா நினைச்சுட்டு இருக்க உன் மனசுல?” எனக் கத்த…
சரண் பிரேக் போட்டான்.
…அது விழவே இல்லை.
மீண்டும் தன் பலத்தை ஒன்று திரட்டி போட்டு பார்த்தான். அது விழுவேனா என்று அழுச்சாட்டியம் பண்ணியது.
“**** நிறுத்துன்னு சொல்லிட்டு இருக்கேன் **** என்னடா பண்ற?” என பத்ரி கத்திட…
“பாஸ்… நானும் நிறுத்தணும்னு தான் ஆசைப்படுறேன். ஆனா இந்த வண்டி சொன்ன பேச்சை கேக்க மாட்டேங்குதே பாஸ்,” என சரண் பாவமாகச் சொன்னான்.
“என்னடா உளறுற?” — பத்ரி.
“பாஸ்… வண்டியில பிரேக் பிடிக்கல பாஸ்,” என சரண் மின்னலாய் முழங்காமல் இடியைத் தூக்கிப் போட்டான்.
“டேய்… என்னடா சொல்ற? ஹேண்ட் பிரேக் இருக்குல்ல… அதை போட்டு நிறுத்த வேண்டியதானே?” — பத்ரி.
“பாஸ்… நானும் ரொம்ப நேரமா ரெண்டு பிரேக்கையும் போட்டு பார்க்கிறேன். எதுவுமே வேலை செய்யல பாஸ். இப்போ என்ன செய்யுறது? அவ்வளவுதானா?
ஐயோ… நான் இன்னும் வாழ்க்கையில எதையும் பார்க்கலையே! ஆசை நிறைவேறாம செத்து போனா ஆவியா அலைவேங்கன்னு சொல்லுவாங்களே… நான் இப்போ என்ன பண்ணுவேன்?
பாஸ்… நான் செத்து போனதுக்கப்புறம் என் குடும்பத்த நீங்க பார்த்துப்பீங்கன்னு எனக்கு சத்தியம் பண்ணிக் கொடுங்க. அப்போதான் என் ஆத்மா சாந்தி அடையும். இல்லாட்டி ஆவியானாலும் உங்க கூடவேத்தான் சுத்துவேன்!”
கெஞ்சலில் ஆரம்பித்து மிரட்டலில் முடித்தவனுக்கு, மரணப் பயத்தில் என்ன பேசுகிறோம், என்ன செய்கிறோம் என்றே தெரியவில்லை. வண்டி ஸ்டியரிங்கிலிருந்து கையை எடுத்துவிட்டு கண்களை மூடிக் கொண்டான்.
“பைத்தியம் மாதிரி உளறாதடா… தள்ளு!” என பின் சீட்டில் இருந்த பத்ரி, முன் சீட்டிலிருந்த சரணை இழுத்துத் தள்ளிவிட்டு தாவிக் குதித்து ஓட்டுநர் இருக்கையில் அமர்ந்தான்.
வண்டியை கட்டுக்குள் கொண்டு வர முயன்றபோது, மெய்யாகவே சரண் சொன்னது போல பிரேக் பிடிக்கவில்லை என்பதும் புரிந்தது.
வேகமாகச் செல்லும் வண்டியை நிறுத்த அவனுக்கு இரண்டு வழிகள் தான் இருந்தன.
முதலாவது — ஏதாவது மரத்தில் மோதச் செய்து நிறுத்துவது.
இரண்டாவது — வண்டியின் இன்ஜினை சூடேற்றி தானாகவே நிற்பதுபோல் செய்வது.
முதலாவதை விட இரண்டாவது வழி தான் சரியானதும் பாதுகாப்பானதும் என்று தோன்ற…
வண்டியை வெகு வேகமாக இயக்கினான் பத்ரி.
சாலையில் தறிகெட்டு ஓடத் தொடங்கியதும், வண்டியின் கட்டுப்பாட்டை இழந்தான். வழியில் போவோர் வருவோரைக் இடித்துக் கொண்டு சென்றதில், சந்தைக்கு விற்பனைக்காக கொண்டு செல்லப்பட்ட பழங்கள், காய்கறிகள், பூக்கள், மண்பாண்டங்கள் யாவும் உடைந்து விழுந்து சிதறின.
ஒருமுறை தன் கட்டுப்பாட்டை மீறிச் சென்றுகொண்டிருந்த வாகனத்தை மீண்டும் தன் கட்டுக்குள் கொண்டு வர, பத்ரி பெரும் முயற்சி மேற்கொள்ள வேண்டி இருந்தது. எனினும் எதிரே வருவோரின் மேல் மோதிப் பெரும் சேதம் ஏற்படாமல் தடுக்க, தன்னால் ஆனவரை எல்லாம் செய்தான்.
“எல்லாரும் தள்ளிப் போங்க! வண்டியில பிரேக் பிடிக்கல! சொன்னா கேளுங்க… தள்ளிப் போங்க!” என எச்சரித்தவண்ணமே வந்தவனால், ஊரே பதற்றமடைந்தது.
மக்கள் அங்கொன்றும் இங்கொன்றும் சிதறி ஓடினர்.
“டேய்… ஓடுங்கடா ஓடுங்கடா! அந்த கார்ல பிரேக் பிடிக்கலயாம்!”
பிள்ளைகள் பதறி ஓட முயன்று கீழே விழப் போன சமயம், அவர்களைத் தடுத்துப் பிடித்தது ஒரு கரம்.
அந்த கரத்துக்குச் சொந்தமானவரைப் பார்த்ததும் பிள்ளைகள் மகிழ்ச்சியில் சிரித்தபடி,
“டேய்… நம்ம அக்கா வந்தாச்சுடா!” எனக் கூவினர்.
அதுவரை பயந்து பம்மியிருந்த பிள்ளைகள் எல்லாம் தைரியமாக அவளை நோக்கிச் செல்ல, அவர்களைத் தன் விரிந்த கைகளுக்குள் அடைக்கலம் தந்தாள் — காக்கி சட்டை அணிந்த நம் கொற்றவை.
“அக்கா வந்துட்டாள்ல… இனி ஆட்டம் சூடு பிடிக்கப் போகுது!” என ஒரு சில்வண்டு கத்தியது…
